In 1729 the provincial government set up the County of Lancaster, which was fourth in the state. The three original counties set up by Penn were Philadelphia, Bucks, and Chester. At this time, land was taken away from Chester County to form Lancaster County, which was given its name by John Wright, a leading citizen, in honor of his home country of England.
